Notebook highlighters

In this article we will show you how to use highlighters to mark text while you read and how to create your own highlighters with a custom name and color.

Highlighters are the colors you will use to mark passages of text in the reader. Every highlight and note you create will be assigned to a highlighter, which will help you organize and find them easily from your notebook.

Highlighters are available for publications in PDF and EPUB formats.

AVAILABLE COLORS

You will always have five colors available:

  • Yellow
  • Blue
  • Rose
  • Orange
  • Green

All colors automatically adapt to the theme you have active in the reader (light, dark, sepia, and more).

CREATE A CUSTOM HIGHLIGHTER

In addition to the five fixed colors, you will be able to create up to five custom highlighters, give them any name you want, and choose a color to identify them.

1. Open the publication in the reader and click the notebook icon in the top toolbar.

2. In the Highlights tab, you will see the row of colors at the bottom. Click the + button to add a new highlighter.

3. Enter a name for the highlighter and pick a color from the palette. Then click Save.

4. Your new highlighter will appear next to the fixed colors and you will be able to use it to mark text from that moment on.

IMPORTANT: Custom highlighters you create will be saved only on the device where you created them and will not sync to your other devices. If you clear your browser or app data, they will also be lost.

RENAME OR DELETE A CUSTOM HIGHLIGHTER

To edit a custom highlighter, hover over its color in the bottom row of the notebook and click the edit icon to rename it, or the remove icon to delete it.

You will only be able to delete a custom highlighter if it is not being used by any highlight or note. If it is in use, you will first need to change the highlighter on those texts or delete them.

QUICK HIGHLIGHT MODE

Quick highlight mode lets you mark text in a single step, without having to pick the color every time.

1. Click the aA icon in the top right corner of the reader to open the settings.

2. Turn on the Quick highlight option. From that moment on, every time you select a text the last highlighter you used will be applied automatically.

If you want to change the active highlighter, you will be able to select it from the settings panel.

FILTER AND EXPORT BY COLOR

From the notebook you will be able to organize your highlights by color and choose which ones to include when you export your annotations.

1. In the Highlights tab of the notebook you will see your annotations grouped by color. You will be able to expand or collapse each group to see the highlights that match.

2. In the bottom row of colors, the checkboxes will let you include or exclude each color when exporting. Uncheck a color if you do not want those highlights to appear in the exported file.
