Manage your notes and highlights
In this article we will show you how to use the Notebook: a panel where you will find all the highlights and notes you created in a publication, with options to filter them, apply actions to them and export them.
The Notebook is only available for publications in PDF and EPUB format.
In this article:
- How to open the Notebook
- The Notebook tabs
- Filter by color
- Actions on each annotation
- Export annotations
- Go to an annotation in the text
1. How to open the Notebook
You will find the Notebook button right in the reader:
- On a computer: the icon is in the top left margin. When you click it, the panel opens as a sidebar.
- On a phone: the icon is in the top right margin. When you tap it, the panel opens in full screen.
If you are offline, the Notebook button will appear disabled. You will be able to see your existing annotations, but you will not be able to modify them.
2. The Notebook tabs
Inside the Notebook you will see three tabs. Each one shows how many items it contains:
| Tab | What you will see |
|---|---|
| All | All your highlights and notes together |
| Highlights | Only text selections without a note |
| Notes | Only text selections that have a written note |
3. Filter by color
Your highlights can have four colors: blue, pink, orange and yellow. In the panel footer you will find the color filters: when you select one or more colors, the Notebook will show only the annotations that match.
4. Actions on each annotation
Each highlight or note has a menu with the available actions. To open it, click the options icon that appears when you hover over the annotation.
From that menu you will be able to:
- Copy the text to the clipboard
- Translate the selected passage
- Listen to the annotation read aloud
- Change color of the highlight
- Share it on social networks
- Delete the annotation
💡 Depending on the store, you may also see additional options such as Copy citation or artificial intelligence actions.
5. Export annotations
1. Open the Notebook and select the Highlights or Notes tab.
2. If you want to export only the annotations of one color, apply the corresponding filter.
3. Click the Export button in the panel footer.
The Export button is not available on the All tab. You will need to select Highlights or Notes to enable it.
💡 The file name will vary depending on the tab you have selected:
- Highlights →
export-{publication title}.txt - Notes →
export-{publication title}-notes.txt
6. Go to an annotation in the text
When you click the text of any highlight or note in the Notebook, the reader takes you straight to the place in the publication where you created it. The panel closes automatically.
