Read without an internet connection
The reader detects automatically when you lose your connection and adjusts the interface. You can keep reading the content that was already loaded, but features that need the server are disabled until the connection is back.
To read offline, the publication must have been opened at least once while you were online, so that its content is in the cache.
What works offline
| Feature | EPUB | Audiobook | |
|---|---|---|---|

*Playing audiobooks offline requires the audio file to have been downloaded beforehand by the Fenice app. In the web reader, audiobooks are not available offline.
What does NOT work offline
| Feature | Reason |
|---|---|
| Search | Needs processing on the server |
| Notebook (highlights, notes) | Needs syncing with the server |
| Chat with this book | Needs processing on the server |
| Translation | Needs the translation API |
| Text to speech | Needs cloud speech synthesis |
| Dictionary | Needs a lookup on the server |
| Add-ons | Needs layout data from the server |
| Share | Needs an internet connection |
These features appear disabled or hidden when there is no connection. When the connection returns, they turn back on automatically, with no need to reload the page.
How content is cached
Content is stored differently depending on the format:
- PDF: the pages you visited are saved in the browser cache. Pages you never opened are not available offline.
- EPUB: the chapters you browsed stay available. Chapters you did not visit are not stored.
- Audiobooks: in the apps, the audiobook downloads in full to the device, either when you download it or automatically when you open it, if automatic download is turned on in the app settings. Once the download finishes, you can listen to the whole audiobook offline. The web reader does not store audio for offline use.
